Elba my Pet
On the beach
Regional Law no. 59/2009 art.19 authorizes dogs to access beaches, provided they are kept on a leash, do not cause disturbance, and remain under the strict supervision of their owners.
Dogs must be registered with the Canine Registry, vaccinated, and treated with antiparasitic products. Swimming is only allowed in the early morning before 8:00 am or in the evening after 8:00 pm, except at the designated dog beaches in Loc. Mola (Porto Azzurro) and Nisporto (Rio nell’Elba), which are the only beaches on the eastern coast with specific areas for dogs. For their “needs,” it is mandatory to take them outside the beach area, always using waste bags to collect droppings.
Walking
The trails and trekking routes that wind through the Tuscan Archipelago can be explored with your dog, provided it is kept on a leash to avoid disturbing wildlife and to prevent dangerous encounters (such as with vipers or pine processionary caterpillars).
In all public places, streets, and sidewalks, cleanliness and order are mandatory; therefore, always carry waste bags to collect droppings.
This is required by law but, more importantly, it’s a matter of good manners and respect towards fellow visitors, residents, and the Island that welcomes you for your holidays.
On Pianosa, dogs on a leash are allowed only within the village. Trekking routes are excluded.
Take care of their health!
Unfortunately, Elba is an endemic area for Leishmaniasis and among the highest-risk areas in Italy. This zoonosis is transmitted through the bite of sandflies (phlebotomus). We recommend taking all necessary precautions:
– ensure proper antiparasitic protection with specific products;
– use repellents such as Neem oil;
– limit evening and night walks;
– let your dog sleep indoors at night, using mosquito nets on windows.
